Maxwell Gessner, MD, a board-certified anesthesiologist, is pleased to announce the availability of advanced interventional pain management procedures at Rainy Lake Medical Center. With 17 years of professional experience in the region, Dr. Gessner brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the Borderland community.

Dr. Gessner completed undergraduate and medical school at the University of North Dakota and received specialized training in anesthesia and pain management at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Va. As a fellowship-trained and board-certified anesthesiologist, Dr. Gessner said he provides the highest standard of care to patients suffering from acute, chronic and cancer-related pain.

Dr. Gessner offers a wide range of interventional pain management procedures, including:

  • Spine Injections: Administered in the epidural space or small joints of the spine to alleviate pain in the back, head, arms, or legs.
  • Joint Injections: Targeting arthritic pain in the spine, hips, knee or shoulders.
  • Muscle and Tendon Injections: For pain relief in specific muscle or tendon areas.
  • Sympathetic Nerve Injections: Addressing conditions such as complex regional pain syndrome, chronic abdominal pain, or pelvic pain.
  • Peripheral Nerve Injections: Helping with chronic headaches, facial pain or nerve entrapment pain.
  • Vertebral Body Procedures: Assisting with fractures or chronic nerve-related pain in the vertebral body.
  • Advanced Procedures: Including spinal cord stimulators and pain pumps for refractory chronic nerve pain and cancer-related pain.

Dr. Gessner said in his practice, he focuses on a patient-centered approach, ensuring safety and comfort during all procedures. A thorough history and physical examination are performed on each patient to determine the appropriateness of interventional pain injections. The effectiveness of these treatments is primarily measured by improved patient function.

“I am committed to providing the most advanced and effective pain management solutions to my patients,” Dr. Gessner said. “By utilizing the latest techniques and collaborating with other healthcare providers, we can significantly improve the quality of life for those suffering from chronic pain.”

Dr. Gessner works closely with primary care providers, physical therapists and mental health professionals to create pain management plans tailored to each patient’s needs. The ultimate goal is to improve patient function and quality of life.

Anyone considering interventional pain injections for the first time are encouraged to discuss their options with their primary care provider.
