Maxine Corrin shares how a simpler prep and compassionate care made all the difference in her latest colonoscopy screening.
When Maxine Corrin survived breast cancer in 2016, her care team recommended genetic testing. The results revealed a gene mutation linked to colon cancer. Since then, Maxine has been diligent about routine colonoscopies, especially with a family history of the disease.
“I have a lot of pre‑cancerous polyps,” she says. “But thankfully, none have ever been cancerous. Prevention is huge for me.”
What wasn’t huge for her? The old colonoscopy prep.
“I always did the drink prep, and it was horrible,” Maxine admits. “I’d get nauseous, bloated… honestly, I know the prep alone keeps people from being screened.”
This year, everything changed.
Maxine tried SuTab, a pill-based prep, and the difference, she says, was remarkable.
“It was so much easier, The pills were easy to swallow, everything was explained so well, and I never felt bloated. It was like night and day.”
Maxine’s experience at Rainy Lake Medical Center made the process even better.
“From the minute I walked in, I could not have asked for a better experience. Dr. (Rachel) Knudson explained every step, even though I’ve been through this many times. She asked if I had concerns, and when it was time for the procedure, she stood beside my bed as I went under. That was incredibly comforting.”
Maxine also praised her care team:
“The CRNA Jefferson did a wonderful job, and my nurse, Marissa, was excellent. Everybody was wonderful.”
The convenience mattered, too.
“I got here before 7 a.m. and was out before 10. I didn’t have to stay in a hotel or sit around waiting. Being able to prep at home in my own comfort zone means so much.”
Her message for anyone putting off a colonoscopy?
“Get it done. The SuTab prep isn’t nearly as bad, and it’s worth your life. This hospital is so important, we are so lucky to have it here.”
